Shakir inspires PIA to second spot in PPFL

KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) ended the first phase of the Pakistan Premier Football League at second spot when they overpowered Habib Bank (HBL) 3-2 in their match at the KPT Stadium here on Friday.

With the game, the opening round during which 69 matched were held came to an end. The 240-match marathon will resume on September 15 after a long break for Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.

PIA opened the scoring through Abdul Jabbar Senior in the 14th minute before international striker Shakir Lashari doubled their lead with a solo effort in the 44th. In the second-half, HBL offered more resistance and were able to reduce the deficit with a 78th minute strike from Zakir Lashari, the younger brother of Shakir.

In injury-time, Shakir scored his second goal for PIA before Bilal Ahmed pulled one back for HBL in the dying moments.

PIA moved to the second spot with 18 points from eight games, ten points short of the leaders Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) who have 28 points from ten appearances.

The opening round turned out to be an eventful voyage as several matches were disturbed due to security concerns and lack of discipline on the pitch. Former champions Army forfeited their match against National Bank here at the KPT Stadium due to aerial firing outside the venue. In another game here at the same venue, two spectators were hit by stray bullets, one of them who was also a local club footballer succumbed to the head injury. In a match in Quetta, PAF players and assistant referee Nasir Ahmed were attacked by Afghan FC players and fans after which PAF forfeited their next two games against Muslim FC and Baloch FC. The other day, two Army players Imran Hussain and Shakeel Ahmed were fined and suspended by the PFF for assaulting the referee during their game against Afghan FC.

KRL, the 2009 champions, have so far put in a splendid performance and stay unbeaten. National Bank, unlike in previous seasons, showed improvement this time, ending the first phase at third spot with 15 points from eight meetings. Defending champions WAPDA were the biggest disappointment as they collected only 14 points from ten appearances. They suffered because of their former head coach Khalid Butt was demoted from the slot of head coach.

Habib Bank did a great job in order to keep themselves away from the relegation zone as they sit at ninth place with 12 points from nine games. Navy and KPT were the others who disappointed their management with poor showing so far. Debutants Police did well by gaining 12 points from led KESC are also struggling with 12 points from seven while Mohammad Essa-eight.

Korangi Baloch win KB Challenge Cup final

The Korangi Baloch Stadium in Sharafi, Karachi witnessed the final of the All-Karachi Korangi Baloch Football Challenge Cup 2011 on 29 July 2011. Venue and tournament hosts Korangi Baloch thrashed Jam XI (Malir) 3-0 in a one-sided game in front of a capacity home crowd to win the cup in style. Amjad Ali scored twice while Aqeel Baloch scored once for the winning side. The final was attended by chief guest Muhammad Irfan, Managing Director of Getz Pharma (Pvt) Ltd, and he distributed prizes to the finalists at the end of the game.

From the first whistle, the hosts Korangi Baloch dominated the game as Jam XI failed to deal with the home side's tremendous pressure as KB striker Amjad Ali opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, with Aqeel Baloch making it 2-0 in 17th minute. Amjad Ali then doubled his score and made it 3-0 just before half-time as Korangi Baloch held a firm grip on the game at the break. In 2nd half, Jam XI managed to play better than before but failed to score as Korangi Baloch controlled the tempo and comfortably ran away 3-0 winners of the Challenge Cup at the final whistle in front of a jubilant home support. Referees were Iqrar Hussain, M Umar, Abdul Latif, and match commissioner Rafique Baloch.

The chief guest presented Rs 100,000 prize and champion trophy to winning side Korangi Baloch, while Jam XI got Rs 50,000 and runners-up trophy, alongside Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000 prizes to the respective captains. The guest also praised Korangi Baloch for hosting such a successful tournament and vowed to ensure Getz Pharma's continued support for local football. Muhammad Imran also stated that 100 trees will be planted around the Korangi Baloch Stadium to add to its beauty.

Tournament chief organiser Ustad Haider Baloch (Vice President DFA Malir) and Fateh Muhammad Baloch (President of Karachi DFA Malir, vice president Sindh FA) both thanked Getz Pharma for sponsoring this tournament and for supporting football.  Other guests present at the final were officals from DFA Malir, DFA West, and DFA East, journalist Riaz Ahmed et al.

Sindh FA declared the All-Sindh Shaheed Awam Football Tournament being played in Khairpur is illegal. Reason given was that tournament organisers Haideri FC (Khairpur) had not sought proper permission from Sindh FA to organise the event. Sindh FA secretary Jan Muhammad Baloch has ordered the tournament's participating teams to withdraw from the event, or else face strict action from Sindh FA.

Lahore, July 14, 2011  President Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat and Mrs. Rubina Irfan, Chairperson Women Committee is left for Frankfurt, Germany to participate in the 5th FIFA Women’s Football Symposium. This three day event will be held in Frankfurt on 15 and 17 July 2011, on the eve of the FIFA’s 6th Women's World Cup Germany. According to the press release issued here by PFF, One hundred and ninety-six of FIFA's 208 member associations are taking part in the event, and of these, 150 countries chose to send their president, general secretary or both. Total of almost 500 delegates are expected to participate in the symposium.  While leaving for Frankfurt, President PFF has said that Women's football has become a worldwide sporting phenomenon and a key driver of growth for the sport of football all around the world. Today, some 26 million women and girls play football and one in every ten football players on this planet is a female. Women's football is growing not only in absolute terms each year, but also in parts of the world where it has perhaps not been traditionally strong. But the development process requires a combination of policies and proactive measures for their implementation.  President PFF further said that Women play a big part in football and I think behind all good footballers, there are some good women.  Mrs. Rubina Irfan, Chairperson Women Committee said that a huge part of my role as a member of the Chairperson Women Committee is to be a pioneer for women's soccer… to be pushing women's soccer in Pakistan in line with the vision of President PFF and showing that it's a beautiful sport, a beautiful game and that women should follow it.  FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany 26 June through to 17 July. Two-time defending world champions Germany are in Pool A with Canada, Nigeria and France. Naveed, Mehmood return from successful Nepalese stint

KARACHI: Pakistan footballers Naveed Akram and Mehmood Ali have
 returned home after a successful stint with a Nepali club Saraswoti Youth
 Club (SYC) during the Nepal Martyr’s Memorial A Division League 2011
 which concluded in Kathmandu recently.

Defender Naveed and midfielder Mehmood were hired by the SYC, which
 had their first appearance in the Nepal’s top league and successfully averted
 relegation, and finished 13th out of 18 outfits which fought each other o
n single league system.

Both players, who are currently playing for WAPDA during the Pakistan
 Premier Football League, represented the debutants SYC for two months
 (May 17-July 17) in the three-month-long league which was played at two 
venues in the Nepal capital.

Mehmood Ali was part of the Pakistan team during all the international
 assignments which the country undertook under Austrian coach George 
Kottan from February 2009 to February 2010 while Naved Akram was the 
member of the national team which won gold medals in the 2004 Islamabad
 and 2006 Colombo South Asian Games. Both the players earned
 Rs200,000 each during their two-month association with the Nepali club.

“It was a good experience for me,” Naved Akram told ‘The News’ here in an
 interview.

“Our club was appearing in the top league for the first time and has been
 able to avert relegation. We put in our best and the club is very happy with
 us,” Naveed said.

The club is more likely to hire the services of few more Pakistani players for
 the next season.

“I have been told that next time I will have to bring in three or four more players
,” the 27-year old Multan born Naveed said.

“There were around 55 to 60 foreign players, most of them African, playing
 in the Nepal’s A Division league. There were players of Uganda, Tanzania
 and other African states and their presence had instilled a life in the 
league which we don’t see here in Pakistan,” Naveed said.

He said that Nepal Football Association (NFA) have earned great money 
through gate-fee because of the enthusiastic crowd watching the league encounters.

Meanwhile, Quetta-born Mehmood Ali was also satisfied with his stint for the
 club and was hopeful that he would serve the club next season as well.ire the
 services f five foreign players for the league as per rules.
